"The question is not what you look at, but what you see."

- Henry David Thoreau

Life is complex, dynamic, non-linear. That’s the challenge of economic and social development. More than fifty years on, the big questions and the big challenges of development remain. The answers are out there. We just have to ask the right questions.

About

Who we are: Founded in September 2010 by Anne Marie Thurber and Mark Belcher, the Center for Innovation in Social Entrepreneurship (CISE) provides strategy and management consulting support to senior leaders in government, business, and civil society to promote lasting prosperity in developing countries worldwide.

Who we serve: Our clients are leaders from business, government, and civil society. They share a common desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others. They seek innovative approaches to the toughest challenges of international economic and social development. They are willing to explore new approaches to achieve outsized results. Our rapidly growing client list includes multinational corporations, the U.S. Government, and large non-governmental development organizations.

How we work: Based upon nearly fifty years of combined experience in international business and economic development, our consulting methodology draws from the disciplines of business management, economics, law, anthropology, behavioral psychology, and complexity science. We focus on building long-term relationships. We deliver creativity, insight, and lasting development impact.

What sets us apart: The challenges growing business and successfully managing risk in emerging markets is inherently complex. We approach these challenges from a Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) approach. A CAS approach focuses on the complex interdependencies that exist at multiple levels within a given system, instead of just what is visible at the surface. Here are a few of the things that set us apart:

  • We focus on analytics - Understanding the underlying dynamics of a system that determine economic and social outcomes is the starting point for all of our work.
  • We adapt technologies to deliver deeper insight - We adapt advanced technologies such as strategic simulation (war-gaming), dynamic systems modeling, social network analysis, and others to help our clients identify opportunities for growth through innovation.
  • We address the human dimensions of change - Our consulting approach incorporates the latest advances in the discipline of human and institutional capacity development (HICD).
  • We focus on sustainable outcomes - We work in partnership with our clients to identify, nurture, and scale locally developed innovations that deliver lasting economic and social benefit to stakeholders and the communities in which they live.

Core Values: CISE is a values-centric organization guided by the following core principles:

  • Listen to others with respect and empathy.
  • Focus on organizations as whole systems and on the forces that give rise to emergent properties.
  • Trust is built on doing the right thing, even if the doing is hard.
  • Learn from every experience and use that learning to help others.
  • Leap at the opportunity to innovate, create, and collaborate.
